The serpent appears in Genesis 3:1, in the Garden of Eden. In Genesis, the serpent is portrayed as a deceptive creature or trickster, who promotes as good what God had forbidden and shows particular cunning in its deception.

(Genesis 3:1)
Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Yes, has God said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”

It deceives Eve into eating fruit from the forbidden tree. This acts gives her additional knowledge, but it also gives her the ability to conjure negative and destructive concepts such as shame and evil.
